Organisational Readiness
Build strong foundations through good governance, legal structure, and organisational capacity.
A well-governed community group is better positioned to achieve its goals, attract funding, and create lasting impact. Before investing in sustainability improvements, it's worth ensuring your community group has strong organisational foundations. Good governance isn't just about compliance – it helps you work more effectively, attract funding, and build trust with your community.
Legal Structure
Having a formal legal structure opens doors to funding and provides protection for members. Common structures for community groups include Company Limited by Guarantee (CLG), Charitable status, Co-operatives, and Community Interest Companies.
- Company Limited by Guarantee (CLG) is the most common structure for community groups
- Charitable status provides tax benefits and credibility
- Co-operatives are suitable for community enterprises
- Informal groups can operate but may face limitations on funding
Constitution & Governance
A constitution (or governing document) sets out your group's purpose, rules, and procedures. It's required for most grant applications and demonstrates good governance to funders and stakeholders.
- A constitution sets out your purpose, membership rules, and decision-making processes
- The Governance Code helps organisations demonstrate good governance
- Regular review ensures your constitution stays relevant
- Templates are available from The Wheel and Charities Regulator
Financial Management
Set up proper financial systems and controls to manage your group's money effectively and meet legal requirements.
- Open a dedicated bank account in the group's name
- Keep accurate records of all income and expenditure
- Implement financial controls (dual signatures, approval processes)
- Prepare annual accounts and have them reviewed/audited as required
Committee & Volunteers
Build an effective team to lead and deliver your work. Good volunteer management is essential for sustainability.
- Recruit committee members with diverse skills and experience
- Define clear roles and responsibilities
- Provide induction and ongoing support for volunteers
- Hold regular meetings with proper minutes and follow-up
Planning & Strategy
Set direction and measure progress through effective planning. A clear strategy helps focus effort and attract support.
- Develop a strategic plan setting out your vision, mission, and objectives
- Create annual work plans with specific, measurable goals
- Review progress regularly and adapt as needed
- Engage your community in planning processes
Communications & Engagement
Build relationships and share your story. Effective communication helps attract volunteers, funding, and community support.
- Maintain an up-to-date website and social media presence
- Communicate regularly with members and stakeholders
- Document your activities with photos and stories
- Build relationships with local media
